The Journey Continues....

As I advance into my late twenties, I realize that the landscape of my character is changing and I am no longer the person I was in my early to mid-twenties. As a matter of fact, I am not the person I was at the beginning of this year. Certain things that I would normally overlook are getting harder to ignore, and my purposefulness and candor might be causing friction with those persons who I believed I could be myself with more than anybody else. Nonetheless as the smoke has finally begun to clear, I realize now more than ever who is truly there for me. Things have definitely changed. I find myself being less of a social butterfly and more of a homebody, domesticated and content. Suddenly I am no longer as accessible and on call to the world as I previously was. I am no longer calling as often as I (never really ever) used to, swapping stories isn’t as much fun, and I think twice before accepting an invite to join anyone to hang. It’s almost like that dependable familiarity of being a social butterfly has slowly started to fade away, and I am left to wonder who’s really to blame? Myself? Evolution? God? Should I expect that as I grow up I will also grow apart from my social network? I learned a long time ago the only thing that is constant… is change. With change comes unfamiliarity. But I am learning to embrace this new chapter in life! As I reflect on this shift into adulthood and the onset of motherhood, I see myself turning and going inward for answers. I am venturing down the hallways and corridors of my life to settle up with some old ghosts and ward off any new ones trying to become squatters. This is private time. A time for me to be with me, and look for the answers within. I probably should have done this more often in life, but I am realizing that there is no time like the present to hang out with oneself. As I go inward I realize how beautiful the landscaping really is inside of this aging cavern, and remarkably I am not as empty and hallow as I once thought I was. My inside upholstery is sewn together with saving grace. My interior is furnished with spiritual growth. My walls are decorated with prayer and praises, and the baseboards and top boarders are covered in scripture. My whole insides smell like Christmas time oozing through my pores. I thought inside of me would be like a mysterious cavern, but instead I have entered into a cave of wonders, right here in my own body! Light shines abundantly from an obscure light source and illuminates every corner. It’s more beautiful than I ever could imagine. It’s actually very comfy inside self. And to my surprise, deep within my cavernous walls, surprise awaits at every turn. Just when I had gotten comfortable with myself, my insides began to shift and move, like a puzzle. You see things get rearranged automatically inside of you and space was being created. Now if you have ever done rearrangement of your house or room it’s quite complex like a puzzle how to get things in just the right spot! Sometimes things must be thrown out in order to make room for something new that you haven’t yet acquired. It was in this rearrangement that I encountered a companion who doesn’t mind the long narrow corridors and blurred visions from candid moments with friends and family playing like an endless movie reel up above. In fact, I think he is rather amused at it all. I am grateful for his company and even if it is only for a short while, I am appreciative and know I am not dependent on his company since I spent so much time with self. But there are those private moments that I don’t want to share with him… and somehow my pride bends and I let him in. There’s something romantic about sharing private past memories with someone you love. And usually it’s in those often painful private moments; he steps in and comforts me. He and I both know, I can face the ghosts and cobwebs of my past myself, but it’s nice to have someone come in your life that you can team up with! Each day I am greeted with butterflies, tumbles, bounces, and stretches from a growing little angel inside my womb. Every day I fall a little more in love with this foreign object I cannot see, hear, smell, or taste. But yet when my hand goes towards by belly, I am comforted to know that this little person inside of me is reaching out to touch my hand back. Perhaps she is wondering what the racket is going on outside of her little comforted world. I don’t know what she is thinking, but I am totally aware of her presence. I am extremely blessed & humbled by this blessing from God. I know that my source of happiness is deeply rooted from within. I love the woman I am becoming and that is all that matters. I’m growing and glowing every day because my own source of power is strengthened by love, and God is love. I’m learning that less association doesn’t necessarily mean disassociation. My own family unit is expanding to include new members. And as my journey takes a slight curve in another direction, I look forward and ahead knowing those who love and support me will always be there in one capacity or another. And for those who are foes will fall by the wayside. xoxox, Roxci

VoteOrDie: The Proactive Response to Trayvon Martin's Death


VOTE or DIE. The slogan seemed a bit extreme and even corny when Hip Hop icon Sean “Diddy” Combs coined the slogan in the 2004 presidential race between then President George W. Bush and then president elect-John Kerry, to get 18-24 year olds active and energized in the voting process. But just eight years later following the racially targeted death of Trayvon Martin, that slogan doesn’t seem so extreme or corny anymore. Ghandi said “we must be the change we want to see in the World.” So this election year, we must VOTE or DIE.

Black America, You Let Me Down!

We March, We Rally, We Uproar Only to become Silenced Peacekeepers Once Again

Black America, you have once again let me down.

We used to be a people that came together to protest the injustices of America. We marched on Washington, held sit ins, were hosed down by powerful water sprays, even attacked by dogs. We lobbied Congress, we took court cases to the Supreme Court, and we carved a path in our Nation’s history that no one will ever forget. It was a proud time to be Black in America. We each held a sense of pride of who we are and fought against the racial supremacist regime of the Klu Klux Klan. We fought against segregation and Jim Crowe for years. Got that people, YEARS! Now, whenever there is a blatant attack of racism against Black America we rise up for days and then go on about our business until the next atrocity happens. We were not afraid to voice our concerns. In the end our cries for justice were heard and the 14th and 15th Amendments regarding Civil Rights and Black Suffrage were ratified. But in those years following somehow we (as a people) became complacent and silenced by the comforts of American standard luxury. I feel as though the sentiments echoed around the country by many is that we no longer have to fight the good fight because racism isn’t a black and white issue anymore. Racism is on the decline! But on the evening of February 26, 2012 racism in its truest form rose its evil ugly head and reminded me that we still live in a country where racism’s roots are still embedded in this country’s dark past in its purest form is a black and white issue.

Allow me to digress for a moment, I promise it will be short. I walked down to the Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial this afternoon on March 22, 2012 during my lunch break. As I walked through the entranceway to the statue, I wondered if Dr. King were alive today what message he would give us? What hope would he instill in us? I listened and waited for an answer, but none came. Despite being a larger than life stone beacon of hope to us all, King’s monument seemed like a waste of time and space. I hung my head down and said to myself, will there ever be hope in this great country you were so proud of Dr. King? In that moment it was if time stood completely still. I rose my head and clear as day I saw the words “I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness.” Now I know this isn’t his exact quote, but in my head I heard him saying those words. And so I rushed back to the office to write this…

Have we forgotten to be drum majors for justice, peace and righteousness? Have we forgotten to stand up before the bandwagon and lead the way to a better more United States of America? We no longer have Dr. King as our drum major, as his legacy is revived in all of us. Instead of one man, we have hundreds of thousands of drum majors with voices who have the power and knowledge to sway the pendulum of racism in this country! That racism will NOT be tolerated and the immediate incarceration and isolation of those who do so will ultimately face a comparable punishment for their crimes. We will do away with the satanic hate groups, the supremacist groups, and strive to form coalitions of all races to promote unity in a country still severely divided by racial lines. How many more black children are we going to have to lose before we stand up and declare a war against racism, AGAIN? Yes, AGAIN! I think I finally understood why Dr. King’s statue was so important to be placed on the Tidal Basin. He represents the changing tide of equality in this country. Ladies and gentlemen, we are STILL fighting racism in this country. EVERYDAY. It may be as subtle as being visibly invisible on a crowded metro train or it may be starring down the barrel of a gun at the hands of psychological gangster. It exists and there is something we can do about it, TOGETHER.

So when will it ever end? When will racism ever be abolished? Probably only when God himself comes down to Earth. But until that day, we can continue to plant seeds of equality and educate ourselves, our children, our community about the dangers of the world we live in, including in our own neighborhoods. We can strengthen programs in our community that promote diversity, harmony, and unity. We can improve upon the structure already in place and create safer neighborhoods for our children, but it takes each of us. Each one of us, with a voice, to stand up for justice and be the drum majors Dr. King would have us to be. According to U.S. Representative John Lewis, "Dr. King had the power, the ability, and the capacity to transform those steps on the Lincoln Memorial into a monumental area that will forever be recognized. By speaking the way he did, he educated, he inspired, he informed not just the people there, but people throughout America and unborn generations."

We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children...

We cannot walk alone. And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back. And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal...”

Focus on Your Dopeness

I learned so much this past year in 2011. Whew! I honestly am glad to see it go, but I had to go through so much to get to the place I am now! 2011 was one of the most awakening, most enlightening, most progressive years of my 27 years of existence. My experiences helped shape my growth in just about every area of my life, especially my spiritual connection with God. And because of this relationship, I have lost a few friends, but gained so much more in return! For the first time I felt God’s perfect peace, and have been striving to maintain its elusiveness ever since. No doubt there will be tests and trails in 2012, but I have a wealth and breadth of knowledge and wisdom gained through my trails in 2011 to master it all. I’m focusing on my dopeness!

Here are the many lessons I learned (and am still learning) this year and some lessons from before 2011 that I hope will help you as we move forward in 2012. Some themes are repeated, but that’s perfectly fine because repetition is the mother of learning. Most of these lessons are from random thoughts, radio shows, tv shows, some are direct quotes from books, tweets from others, and some are just from my own life experiences. Print this out and review it as much as possible. Please use this list to focus on your dopeness in 2012!

1.If you do nothing else, PRAY.
2.PRAY UNCEASINGLY! Prayer changes situations!
3.Need nothing, attract everything.
4.Everything is energy.
5.Release to renew.
6.We average 60,000 thoughts per day and most of them are habitual. Challenge that! Change your thoughts!

7.Satan is the ego:”the deceiver”. EGO = edge God out. Strive to lose your ego as much as possible.

8.If you live your life fully, you will only die once, but if you are scared, fear will kill you day after day.

9.Start from the destination, and then figure out how to get there.
10.A little faith will bring your soul to heaven, but a lot of faith will bring heaven to your soul.

11.Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.
12.The road to wealth is to observe what people want and give it to them. We are here to serve. Insight + Action + Serving = Wealth!

Dancing in the Darkness


Darkness existed before there was light. Light was birthed from darkness, so if darkness is the birthplace of light… out of darkness we too were created and yet we must return to darkness’s arms because each day new mercies we receive! Each day we are reborn symbolically. Take a look around at night, everything you see in the day is still present. But it is only with light can you begin to appreciate its awesome splendor, its grandeur.

John 1:5 says “The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.”


For a long time I never understand the darkness, or its dark purpose. In my opinion darkness was unkind. Darkness meant death, despair, and unforgiveness, sadness, and insomnia… but until recently, I have never spent any real time with darkness. But under duress, I have had a chance to spend some quality time with darkness, and I come to love her unyielding ability to cloak the universe in her stillness. I have only just begun to understand her presence, and even after eons of following the daylight, darkness is yet still understood.


Let me make this clearer. Being in the sunlight burns, we all know that. Being exposed is uncomfortable. The heat (pressure) is often what breaks people down. You have to take moments of sunlight with the moments of total darkness in order to recharge. Now I am not writing this note to convince you to see darkness as anything more but darkness… but I am going to share why I think darkness exists. Darkness is the birthplace of a life more abundantly.


Take a moment and venture outside at night and look around, flowers bloom under the moon and not the sun. Grass grows on cool nights filled with the day’s leftover dew drops. The new day starts and ends at midnight so that we have spent a good 5-6 hours in darkness before we even see the dawn of light. Without darkness we could not appreciate the light. Without darkness, light would destroy everything, and it is because of those dark moments we grow! Only in the darkness can you appreciate how beautiful darkness really is. That even on the blackest of nights, the stars still shine and the moon is always full. There is always hope and the will to press on because it is during that darkest hour the strength to live, survive, and the will to keep going takes over.


Yes, even in the darkest of moments we are growing. Night time is a time to recharge, to dream, to think, to pray, to spend time with ourselves, our thoughts, and our feelings. It is in nighttime we confront our fears or succumb to them. It is in night we rebuild ourselves to prepare for the day. And it is in those dark moments that we often wish for a light of some sort, but we are never really in total darkness. No, there is no blackout with God and his grace, because even when there’s no electricity, there is the moon and the stars proving that even in the darkest moments God is still present. Only in darkness can we reach our full potential.


When I was a little girl, I used to want so bad to reach for the stars and bring one home. I was around eight years old and I spent a whole day and night crying one summer evening that it wasn’t fair I couldn’t reach the stars. The next day my brother bought a pack of glow in the dark stars and helped me put up a solar system of stars up on my small ceiling so that I had the whole universe within my grasp. I’ll never forget that moment. But more importantly, he told me in order to make them glow, I had to keep my light on and let them absorb the light so at night when it was dark they would glow.

So as the universe is ever changing so are we! When periods of darkness come into our life we shouldn't get depressed, upset or angry. In order to live life we must go through some good days, some bad days, some rainy days, some sunshine, some long days, and some dark nights. But while it is a time of abundance and sunshine absorb all the light you can that makes you into the men and women you are destined to be, and I guarantee you, during periods of total darkness, you will shine just like that pack of glow stars on my bedroom ceiling. There are those who will try and steal your light or make you feel bad about yourself. There will be situations that force you to re-evaluate those in your life and situations that may force you into the darkness. But always remember, darkness creates light, so shine on ladies and gents.

I am a child of Dusk and Dawn, the children of Light and Darkness when they sky becomes shades of reds, yellows, oranges, purples, blues, grays, and the sun and the moon trade places, I become alive, for I have learned to Dance in the Darkness.

3 years... Some Kinks and Curls Later

Good and Bad Hair:

The Good. My hair care journey has taken me from every “black labeled” isle of Target, Walmart, to the dark recesses of Beauty Supply stores across the DMV, NYC, and GA looking for hair care products. Three years later after my so-so big chop, my hair care journey has taken me to various lengths literally. I started off in October of 2008 with my cute short curls and became a product junkie. I was obsessed with Carol’s Daughter’s products and I still am to a point. As my cute coif began to grow into the awkward stage of various lengths, shapes, curl patterns I like to call “nothingness” I was a weave and wig girl for life! I had long hair, straight hair, silky smooth hair, you name it. I dyed it, fried it, covered it but somehow managed to get through it. And just like my hair, my relationships went through almost the same process. I just couldn’t any longer accept the status-quo (relaxers). Three years of growing out my hair = three years of embracing singleness.

During that time, I learned to love me for me, hair kinks and all. I ran into a few guys who prefer it straight, simply to just mess it up with their hands… but most like it curly! Unruly like myself! I am not a rebel perse, I just do things my way. But back to the hair at hand. I had fun with it, and still do. I LOVE my curls, and even now, I find myself enjoying their thickness. I love to be able to just let my hair float in water, soak up conditioner, and change from straight to curl with water. I love rainy days because I finally can walk in the rain and not worry about my hair. I like being different. I like being a trendsetter. I love embracing my own quirkiness (Lord knows I have a lot of it), but most importantly, I love being me!



The Bad. A lot of women think that by going natural it’s easy or cheaper. Heck no! It’s hella hard! Trust me! I go through conditioner like soap. I’m buying $10 bottles weekly! Yeah this regimen is expensive. I am deep conditioning twice a month, because I have color in my hair and therefore my ends stay dry. I am constantly looking for products to add moisture to my hair sans spraying water on it! Do you know how many bobby pins, curling irons, flat irons, hair pomade, etc . that I go through on the regular just to maintain my curls?! It’s a budget all in itself and it’s not cheap! I can’t just go to the salon whenever and drop $60+ every two weeks! Instead, I have to maintain my own hair care most often months at a time. I have to come up with new hairstyles that will fit my curl pattern and transition from work to play effortlessly! And honestly, I’m sick of it all. I miss straight hair. The smooth edges, the long tresses! I used to rock a MEAN wrap! Alas, those days are dead and gone and as it stands now, at the slightest bit of moisture my hair kinks and knots up like non-other. I miss my straight hair days, my wraps at night, and my flowing tresses! I miss the salon gossip, the fresh smell of a relaxer and glosser spray (don’t judge me). It’s sad to say I am ready for a change.

I feel like I am a chick who has it all together, shoes, fit, nails, face… but when it comes to my hair… well, let’s just say I am in the wrong department for it to be so unruly! Yeah, I’m over it, but maybe I’m not. Maybe I still have room to grow. It’s been three years and so much has happened in these three years that I maybe I have another three left in me! Perhaps this is just another stage of transition and the best is yet to come. It took so much work to get here, why conform? I think I’ll keep my curls a little while longer… I got a feeling someone will like them just as much as me :)

An Open Letter To My Sisters

Hello Ladies-

I wanted to stay annomyous for the sake of embarassment, but allow me to be transparent in my testimony to you. No one was ever straight with me about how good it felt to be inside you, or the dangers of having sex too much. All I knew was that it was the best way to release all the anger and frustration going on in my life. But tonight, I want to make an open apology to the women that have shared my bed, their bed, the backseat of my '07 Altima, any random hotel bed/room/floor, my mom's couch, my boy's place, the girl i met in the club a few months earlier, to all of you ladies. I sincerely apologize. I know now that my actions have caused you great pains, and often times the source of your resentment towards men, and establishing a healthy relationship.

Most of you I can recall by face, but I'm so sorry I didn't even bother to remember your name. But most importantly I am sorry for what I caused to grow in you. I'm sorry for manipulating you and tricking you into falling in love with me. No one ever took the time to exaplain to me about the crazy attachments that come about as result of getting involved sexually. All I ever heard was don't do it, and just like a rebel that alone made me want to do it more... No one told me that marriage was sacred. Sex before marriage is a sin. I should have been honest with all of you up front, I wasn't ready for a commitment. But now I am a changed man. I didn't mean to hurt so many of you women and I hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive me for all the pain I have caused. And again, ladies I apologize.

I apologize to each of you for not being true from the start, for running away from you, leaving a hole in your heart.

I apologize for making promises that I couldn't keep, for building a foundation based on treachery and deceit.

Being selfish and inconsiderate, I did what I wanted to do, making costly decisions without thinking of you.

I apologize for not holding you through restless nights and stormy days, for my immature thoughts and my foolish ways.

Instead of carrying your love with me, I just threw it on the shelf, after we made love I turned away, only thinking of myself.

You cried your heart for me, while I was out running wild and loose, I destroyed the essence of your love with physical, mental, and emotional abuse.

I gave you hell woman by giving up when times got rough, I didn't slap you, I pushed you, I neglected you - even that's bad enough!

Now I see why you build a wall around you, because it is me you despise, but that's the price that I have to pay for all the times I wore a disguise.

I pray to GOD that one day you will realize, That I LOVE YOU ALL LADIES, AND I APOLOGIZE.

Invisible, Visible Only By Me

There’s some good to being invisible. You can slip your way out of a messy situation; vanish as if you were never there in the first place. Invisibility comes in handy when you want to be illusive, fearless, powerful, and conniving. But invisibility also bears a heavy price. An impenetrable layer of isolation that ONLY if someone is looking for you, will they be able to find you. For you will always see them coming, but only they can decide to detect your presence, or brush you off as a mere imaginative notion.

I am an invisible woman, visible only by me… No amount of make-up, bright colors, plastered smiles, weave, the curve of my waistline, the fullness of my breasts, the best of whatever, no matter what, I still am invisible, visible only by me. I glide in my five inch pumps effortlessly across brick, cobblestone, and tried DC streets, but no one notices. My curled coif bounces in the sunlight changing hues from golden brown to bronze tinged. My bright perfectly manicured orange nails, my nude lips, my smoldering eyes, my jewel tone dress announce my presence, but no one notices. No one notices the smile plastered on my lips, the playfulness dancing in my eyes, tucked safely being black rimmed 50s style sunglasses, no one notices, because no one can see me. My yellow iphone stuck to my hand like glue, glued to my ear laughing and chatting with you know who, about you know what, but since I am not your concern, you do not notice me. No one notices that today I straightened by hair. I am invisible, because you don’t see me. Yet I have run out of things to do to get people to notice me, short of announcing my invisibility. You see I can shove them, scream, and event throw a fit… but most people will just dismiss me as a societal misfit. And then what would I have accomplished? I will still be invisible, visible only by me.

I notice it most when I am out and about by myself. No one even seems to look my way, to offer me a seat, to help me with my bags, or to be a helping hand. But yet I am a friendly shy kind of woman, with a welcoming laugh, I’m silly, I am fun, ain’t I just like everyone? But yet it seems to be, it seems to me, that I am still invisible, visible only by me. Others brush me off like a preconceived notion, a pun, a joke, or a case of mistaken identity. But I am not mistaken, I am me, visible only by me.

It happens to me, all the time you see, when people ask their questions about me, they just want to know the superficial me. No one cares that I once fell out of a tree, what about if I cry or what color I bleed. What inspires me to write, what makes me smile, and what kinds of foods I’d like to try. Instead most of time I get unfortunate claims and made up rhymes, requests of photos of what’s between my thighs, and their favorite pastimes. And with each person I meet, a little more of me, obscures my visibility. A little more of me fades into oblivity. Invisible to them, but visible only by me.

I want a chance, a mere opportunity, for someone to glance and recognize me. To stop mid sentence and stare at me. To understand that perhaps there is more to me. Despite the outward appearance and design, that inside this body is a woman so divine, that only by the Grace of God, could you see my true shine, but in that moment, you carved out space and time, to truly get to see me, for me, and not just from behind. But to give me your trust and in turn you’ll have mine. TO see me for the woman I be, visible behind my guise of invisibility.

See I am chasing this idea, this absurd propriety that dating is easy just wait to be seen. When it seems, the only ones that can see me, are the ones not worthy of me. You see this makes things complicated when you are trying not to be seen, by other invisible people, visible only to me. A wolf in sheep’s clothing, I can spot easily, and they too can look through me, and see my vulnerability. So I stay in the shadows, I stay hidden but not on purpose, I just don’t know how to make you see me, visible to just you and not me.

Perhaps one day, as I pass by you, you will smell the vanilla cupcake fragrance lingering in the air and you will turn to come running into my bakery, wanting to know so desperately my secret recipe. For me to give you cart blanch access to satisfy your sweet tooth, leaving you to crave the sweet things buried deep within my womb, oozing chocolate covered kisses, and bursting my fountain of chocolate liquid desire. Exposing my vulnerability and yet divulging yourself head first into an orgasm of caramel coated ecstasy. Can you see me? Or will I forever be invisible, visible only by me?

So every night at dream time, I close my eyes and dream of all that you can see in me, visible by only to you and not me. You know my flaws, my weaknesses and you will never take advantage of me, kuz it was in my invisibility that you came and found me. It’s because of you, I am invisible, you’re my hidden opportunity, but in reality you don’t exist much like how I feel when I do not exist.

*sigh* But yet none of the passerbyers seems to notice or care, I’ve gone missing. And so I remain invisible. Visible only to me. In hopes that one day, someone will notice the quirky girl that so much of her remains a mystery. In the pouring rain or the beaming sunshine, no matter how bright my light, how bright I shine, no matter the color I wear, I am no match for the curse that I bear. I want to be seen, by someone other than me. And yet here I remain, invisible, visible only to me.

The Commencement of Adolescence

Upon the encroachment of my 25th and a half birthday I have started to realize I am no longer blossoming into womanhood. I give thanks to the church that I have called home for over 20 years, the culprit for this thinking. This past week the church celebrated 125 years of serving the Richmond community! Take that you mega churches! Yes, Riverview Baptist Church has held on through the ebb and flow of all sorts of churchy drama, community changes, and still is standing like a beacon of light on the corner of Idlewood Avenue and um… Robinson Street :) But it was sitting on one of the back pews, probably one of the same pews I sat on when I was an infant in my mother’s arms, that I realized I was no longer in transition from adolescence into adulthood. I had arrived into Womanhood. However, there was no pomp and circumstance, no graduation ceremony, no Senior-itis, no party invitations and acceptance speeches. Instead it was a graduation of my mental ideology that initiated into the commencement of adolscence.

I started on this journey probably before I can remember. The date and time of my transformation was predestined upon my conception. Physically my body began to change when I was in middle school and I was physically a woman long before my childish mentality would catch up. I could bear children at the ripe age of 12, which only a few hundred years ago didn’t seem young at all. From my early blooming season, I navigated the often choppy and treacherous waters of adolescence with tremendous speed and agility entering into my early 20s full speed ahead. Those early years of being 20 something were full of a lot of good times and a lot of hard lessons. But none of it could prepare me for what happened when I turned 24. Something about that magical number, exactly 12 years after my body blossomed into womanhood my mind began to bloom. Since that date in December 2008 I have had the privilege of arriving into womanhood with the grace and fortitude of those who have come before me.

What college didn’t prepare me for, experience laid the foundation. I’ve been through some things, and my divine purpose has been laid in front of me. What once felt like I was wading in the waters of Jordan has now been replaced by the sensation of dry land. What I face before me is uncharted territory. This is the arrival at one of many destination points in my life’s journey. As I look back, I see my childhood, the memories both positive and negative I carry at my side. When I was a child, I thought like a child. Now that I am grown, much is required of me and I must cut a pathway for others to follow. Like the church I grew up in, I have made it through a few ebb and flows of life’s journey.

In my short years on Earth, I have blossomed into womanhood. I now march to the beat of my own drum. I walk in my own size 8 1/2 pumps. I now pause to marvel at how beautiful this world is, and shed a tear over its destruction. I have manifested into a woman of character, a woman of good reputation, a woman of her word, and a woman of steadfast prayer and praise, a woman of God. I am a woman on the grow! Just because I have arrived into womanhood, does not mean I have stopped growing and learning. I have loved a few with all my heart and soul, I have given time and space to those who didn’t deserve it, and shied away from those who did deserve it. I have made promises I have broken, and have been disappointed by others. Some friendships have been strained, and others strengthened. Work has been hard but fruitful, and I have given back to the community that supported me.

As I sat on that last church pew I saw the guest preacher before me materialize into a living and breathing God. The church walls dissolved and then God himself sat down with us to marvel at 125 years of service and devotion. It is a blessing when God sits down to marvel. It was in the vision that I saw myself sit down to marvel at how blessed I am and how I continue to withstand the ebb and flow. Twenty-five years may seem minuscule to some, but for those who have shared in my joys and pain know that 25 years into womanhood is indeed a blessing. I thank God for those who have been with me since the beginning, for those who have come and gone, and for those who remain!

My Thoughts On Love & Relationships Of A Career Woman

High school romances were so easy and so much fun. They were innocent and romantic, and always full of X’s and O’s and smiley faces. But for most of us ladies it’s been many years out since we were in classrooms, gushing over how cute the new boy was… but in many ways, I feel I am still learning the basics when it comes to love. Lately, I find myself operating between my constant state of vulnerability and my more grown up attitude and beliefs than my past has been conditioned to be.

Maybe the choice between becoming professionally and academically driven and opening my heart is as artificial as my nail tips? My hair is natural, my lips and hips haven’t been surgically altered, but yet I can decide when and to which color I am going to paint my nails with far greater ease than the possibility of finding and falling in love. Living with an open heart takes far more emotional strength and calculated risk than my academic preparation has prepared me to be. So while pursuing success may be a grueling journey, it is far easier than say dating. Academically you can see the progress and at some point you reap your rewards. Perhaps us Black women find it easier to commit to professional relationships more so than romantic involvements simply in part because we trust the system. Navigating the economic ladder usually doesn’t require as much finess and social regurgitation as dating. To put it blatantly, if you could date knowing that it would be a success or failure based on calculated procedures there would be a lot less single ladies out there. But since it isn’t, some women are left wondering if there is a full-proof way of finding love.And if not, why even take the risk.

So eloquently put by Leslie Pitterson of Clutch Magazine, “Years of relationships with men of different shades of the same character can leave a woman of any color numb to the idea of the chase.” Honestly, how much can one woman take? Why is when she is ready, there seems to be a lack of guys ready with her? Guys say blame her, ladies say blame the the guys. Who’s to blame when love doesn’t stand a chance to gain? Then again, we ladies grow up with the hurt and pain of broken relationships passed down through generations, it’s in our genetic makeup now. We learn at the innocence of child hood to have guarded perspectives of black men from our mothers, aunts, sisters, cousins, grandmothers and peers.

So woman to woman, I ask you ladies to take a look at whatever your guarded perspectives of relationships are and take some advice from a woman who is learned new things about herself everyday…. Remember to have fun! Ladies we could each write a book on the relationships, dates, one-nights, and pitiful excuses of a date we have been on, but in actuality if I had my chance, I’d instead tell the world how deathly afraid I am to ever give love again, because no one can love me better than I can love myself, I think. Maybe it’s time I take a leap of faith into love’s ocean and open my heart to its soothing touch. It’s time I had some fun with love.

Murder in the First Degree: The Truth about Cheating

What often may begin as innocent flirting or a simple act of affection can lead toward the act of infidelity or murder in the first degree, as cheating takes place in the mind long before it happens in the bedroom. There isn't too heavy a grey line here, but the decision to cheat is pre-meditated. To cheat is a choice. It is an action that roots its initial stages in your mind before you have carried out that choice. I am specifically referring to situational/ circumstantial cheating. That is cheating that's based on your current relationship status as “in a relationship” and in a cognizant state, you choose to step out of the bounds of your relationship into the awaiting arms of KARMA. But the consequences of your actions are purely your own, as I am not here to discuss the whys and the hows. There are a gazillion reasons as to why and how people cheat. But, I believe that people cheat simply because they CAN cheat.

Infidelity is a topic that doesn’t adhere to skin tones, age, sexuality or gender. People, all over the world cheat. However, infidelity is something the black community is no stranger towards, but yet has not made significant gains in combating the issue. We have witnessed recently, numerous celebs that have been ousted for cheating on their wives or girlfriends. Sure they have been chastised in the public eye and their private life put on public display, but who was really humiliated? Had that guy only decided NOT to cheat, would his private life still be intact. And, it’s not just a guy thing. A lot of people always lump men as the ones who cheat, but I have noticed a lot of men have been cheated on before by a girlfriend or wife. Yes, women cheat as well, it just so happens that women are a bit more careful at covering up their tracks. Other times, their actions are blatant disrespect towards their sig other.

There’s no cookie better than new cookies is a common saying among men. In other words men want variety. The opportunities for “cookies” is everywhere. We live in a “prostitution culture.” Just turn on the TV if you don't believe me. Sexual images are on display 24/7 and are not hardly censored. The man that says the above quote is loyal to the booty. He will never cheat on the booty. Booty is his best friend. Some men are at that level, and it's a Woman's choice to recognize that or to ignore it. Such Men are honest cheaters. Honest cheaters are loyal to the pursuit, not the person. Honest cheaters are devoted to the ritual of getting into relationships and not the relationships themselves. Those Men are committed the feminine body part that gives them the most pleasure.

As stated before, many women DO cheat on their sig others, and often more than once. The majority of women in relationships cheat emotionally. And that some of the main reasons most Women do not cheat sexually has to do with programming received from childhood, culture, religion, other Women- and even in most cases – shame of pregnancy, because usually the Woman is stuck with the baby. This idea is ingrained in most women even though we have contraceptives and birth control. Those things are not a natural part of our psyche, which explains why so many people still do not use them.

Sexual concurrency might be the acceded norm for many in the Black community but at what risk? Black males with numerous families can’t father them all effectively so the children are left without stable homes. Some black women who are cheated on not only become distrustful of black males but also angry and depressed. And in the end, although black males in their youth feel good about their number of conquests, detached and unmarried black men have the lowest life expectancy. Also the spread of sexual diseases amongst Black women, especially herpes and HIV, continues to be a large result in sexual concurrency and other promiscuous sexual behavior.

In the end no one wins.

Cheaters usually end up caught at some point, and often times it can be quite embarrassing (think Cheaters TV show). Every sex partner that a Man or Woman has ever had, has volunteered to help create them at a material and emotional level. Physical and mental sex are pathways to our self creation. I believe that because we are accustomed to having whatever it is we desire, when we desire it, including another person... the probability of cheating has increased. This Has Been An Idol PSA

I normally don't get into the Anmerican Idol hype since the majority of the people who can sing... get voted off! but oh the American Idol auditions are always too funny! And this year Atlanta has really brought their best material! Insert General Larry Pratt from good 'ol hot ATL. He has a message for those men walking around the streets of ATL with their pants hanging low... pull 'em up boys, or Gen. Pratt is out to get you! Inglorious Bastards

I have a question to all the fellas out there: how come you never recognize a gem until you don’t have it anymore? Throughout the dating period you may not have been ready to commit to her, but she was ready to commit to you. She gave you her heart and you didn’t have the decency to let her know the truth. The truth of the matter being you weren’t ready to be just her man. I wonder, have you told yourself the truth about how you really are? How come when a woman finally leaves you do some of you men finally realize her worth? Why even string her along?
As you know, I am not speaking to all men here. If you are a good man and have a good woman at home, perhaps you can share some insight with your fellow brethren here about what it takes to be a good man to a woman. Ladies, listen up, these men may have some advice to help you locate “a good man” vs one of these inglorious bastards.

Now I am not blaming you for creating the cycle. It was a number of factors that acted as catalysts to the disintegration of the black family, however you all have the power to stop the cycle from continuing into another generation. But you haven’t started. When are you men going to do better? When are you men going to hold yourself to higher standards? Are you holding out for the right woman? Exercise some self control and mind control and focus on other important things besides instant gratification. If it’s all about some ass or a nutt at the end of the day why even pretend to be interested in getting to know someone? Just let it be known. Stop blaming women for your own insecurities and get your grown man on! Start REACHING your dreams not just aspiring. Get to know a woman for her mind and not her body. Her body doesn't raise kids or ensure the future generation will have positive role models to identify with. Reach back into your community and help your fellow brothers stay in school and help them get a job. Buy a suit or two brothers! Seriously.

For the bastards, I never understood the male chauvinist attitude where women were treated as objects of desire and not a jewel to be cherished. Now sex is no new age phenomenon. It predates men and women (think animals). Sex was created for reproduction purposes and unfortunately now it’s pretty much just for pleasure. Is that what men are looking for in today's society, a pleasureable moment? So you want to get it out of your system, you say? Put that same energy into one woman and see what you get. HA! You have a higher chance of staying disease free! But before you even lie down with someone how about you figure out what the end result will be? Have a conversation with each other that doesn't lead to the bedroom. Think about your future, and your future’s future.

Teenage Love Affair

Remember back in the day when loving someone was innocent. There wasn’t a “process” that was involved. You just liked the person and whole lot and when they liked you back you started dating after a few phone calls. Remember when you loved that person because they meant so much to you? Do you remember your first high school teenage love affair? Matter of fact, do you remember your first high school crush? Why did you like that person?

You and your boo were together for always and forever. If you went to the same school, they would walk you to class and hold your books for you. They would leave notes in your lockers or under your chair in class. You would doodle his/her name all over your notebook and couldn’t help but to be in love with him/her. You all might have sat at the same table for lunch or even had at least one class together. After school they would take you home or walk you to your bus. And even if you didn’t go to the same school, somehow you would end up on the phone for HOURS and meet up for weekend rendezvous in the school or mall parking lots.

I remember those nights I would fall asleep on the phone with my boo for hours. Hang up and do it all over again the next night! Or those days we would be on the phone from 3:00 until dinner (that was family time in my house) and then right back on the phone after homework was done. I have no clue what I had to say for those umpteenth hours, but whatever it was, the conversation never stopped. Now, you gotta pull teeth to ask people about their day, and conversations are held in 140 characters or less. So why don’t we embrace those innocent times again? Granted the 16 year old mind is flightier than a rare bird but there was some sincerity in those relationships. You dated the person not because you thought they were good husband or wife material, you didn’t date them because they were rich (maybe you did), but because you REALLY liked them! Above all that person was SOO CUTE to you! Ahh to be young again!

Fire is seen always negatively,
Never for how beautiful it really can be.
It consumes and destroys and burns, but in fire there is rebirth.
Fire can dance on water, it can lighten up the sky.
Fire can make the earth move, and fire can solidify.
Fire can mend a broken heart, fire can keep you warm,
But whom can fire lean on when there's no one to depend on?
Fire’s glow is hot and bright.
The dawn of the day stretches across the sky to bring sunlight.
At evenings dew the glimpse of a fire,
Has given up hope of finding its heart’s one desire.
To return at dawn’s first light,
In search of the one love fire can ignite.
But whom is fire to love?
Not the sky, nor the earth, nor the seas billowing by,

New Beginnings: That Mean Old Yesterday & Life More Abundantly

Yesterday is History, Tomorrow is A Mystery, Today is a Gift, that's why it's called the Present.

You ever had a yesterday that was mean as Hell? Like it was personally out to get you. All you could do is just make it through the day. It might have started out as a day of potential and possibilities, but it ended up being a day of problems. Well Today is a New day and you can kick that mean old yesterday to the curb. Its a day of wonders and potentiality. Today I choose to live life more abundantly. 2009 has past its prime… but it’s time to win in 2010. I left some BAD HABITS back in 2009. I am on a path of self improvement.

I started with God, The Father and figured out how to blossom into womanhood. I lived history as OBAMA was sworn into office that cold January day. By March I learned a lesson in tough love when Chris (BeatHerDown) Brown beat up Rihanna before the Grammy Awards. I realized even stars aren’t immune to abusive treatment. I moved on in life and love and then we ended things by breaking up. By June I made my last stand with ALL THE SINGLE LADIES and TURNED MY SWAG ON! (Seriously, SWAG was the most overused term of 2009). In April I chopped off half of my hair. A rocky first half led me to believe summer time would be a growth time for me. With a relatively mild summer I worked hard to focus on me. I read a few books on how to Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man, The Conversation, and the Bible too. I signed up on TWITTER @acelove if you need me. I managed to create my blog site http://TwentyandFab.blogspot.com is where you can find me. Still didn’t get my very own BlackBerry. I vowed to go on a quest for love’s true identity. But the month of June turned out to be a mess, when the RedLine Metro crashed and Michael Jackson passed. I never thought the events would ever coincide, but unfortunately they happened side by side. July and August lived up to be steamy, but blessed and highly favored the Lord would see me. By September I witnessed true love in the making, a celebration of the union between Toni & JB. Then VIBE shut down and I thought my world was lost. During the Fall I began to read up on the Holy Trinity. Studied with twelve disciples and took my behind to church. I went through October, November and December and found out THOSE WHO MATTER WON’T MIND, and THOSE WHO MIND, DON’T MATTER. After Chris Rock let the world know the truth about GOOD HAIR I took off my wigs and let my Righteous SOUL GLOW. I ended the year with the passing of a matriarch, a grandma who was called on home, but in that sadness was rebirth when Toni gave birth (on the same day). Throughout the holidays, I relied on those I could trust, my family and I watching a few great movies that restored my faith in love. THE PRINCESS and the FROG, AVATAR, and I gave thanks to the Lord I was not raised like PRECIOUS. I began to sow seeds into my faith, and grew into a woman of substance and faith. With Faith and Hope I stand before thee ready to face this New Year before me. A life more abundantly I enjoyed 2009, but in 2010 like FABOLOUS says it’s MY TIME to shine.
